Ridley Scott’s Alien prequel | Rickard Andersson

Ridley Scott’s Alien prequel

I’m getting all giddy thinking about this. Ridley Scott is one of my favorite directors and I love the Alien franchise. If ever there was a movie I was going to see on opening night, this is it.

As of yet, there is very little information on the project, but I remember Ridley Scott talking about a prequel in the DVD extras for Alien. If I recall correctly, one of the things he talked about was that he wanted to make a film that gets to the bottom of what happened to the “Space Jockey“, the giant fossilized alien sitting in some kind of chair in the derelict ship on the moon LV-426.

The Space Jockey

According to Wikipedia, the original space jockey prop was 26 feet (7.9m) tall and the actors in that particular scene were Ridley Scott’s own children. He used his kids to archive the special effects technique called forced perspective where an object appears larger and taller than it actually is. That’s the kind of moviemaking and commitment I hope Ridley Scott can bring back to the Alien world.

The question I have as an avid fan of the series, is Scott going to use CGI effects? I hope not too much. A little is okay. But looking at James Cameron Avatar looks a bit on the fake side. In fact many more film directors turning to computer graphics seem to have films that look less and less real. Hence the new Star Wars films. My suggestion is that you have an orginal ship (prior to the mining ship), land on LV427 and fight off a few aliens, having only one survivor (ash – the science officer), who then returns later in Alien with Ripley. You can also include where this alien craft came from. But all in all, Ridley Scott will get it right. He has to get this series fixed! I hope!

I’m certain there will be more CGI effects than the previous films. It’s just the way it’s done these days. It’s too expensive and time-consuming to build huge sets. I have a feeling Ridley will get it right though.

Wow, I always wondered what happened to the space jockey. It’s my favorite scene from Alien. The mystery and suspence is incredible. It’s so awesome Ridley’s gonna make a prequel. It’s a loveletter to all fans.

Hopefully, knowing what happened to that creature won’t ruin the scene.
